Joey nearly quits comedy in the season one episode "But Seriously, Folks," after Phyllis Diller (who was there as an audience member) hogs his slot at a comedy club, deciding to change his name to Joe and become a serious businessman. To cheer him up, the girls somehow tracked down Vicky and surprised him with her. He invites her to the 30th "Dadi-versary" party the girls threw for him, Jesse and Joey. Since Becky, Jesse and Joey are all moving back to San Francisco, Danny announces he's moving back too, and back into the house. In season four Becky's talk show The Gab was a success but it turned back into Wake Up San Francisco. Danny refused to audition to be her co-host, and briefly lived life as a retiree.

Michelle Tanner

Danny is more overprotective of Michelle than the other girls. Michelle was just a baby when Pam died, so she hardly remembers her mom. Jesse and Joey's misadventures in taking care of her when she was a baby provided a great deal of humor. Once Michelle started to grow up, she became the focus of more of the show's storylines.

Steve Hale

Matt and Steve fight for D.J.'s affection, but both end up dating other people after D.J. Says she's not ready to commit someone new yet. Realizing they have feelings for each other, Matt breaks up with his girlfriend and starts dating D.J. On the way to Steve's wedding in Japan, D.J., wearing a sleeping mask – and thinking she's talking to Kimmy – unknowingly tells Steve that she is going to pick him over Matt, and she feels like she's losing her soulmate. Derek S. Boyd (portrayed by Blake McIver Ewing) is one of Michelle's friends (appearing in eight episodes total throughout seasons six through eight). Michelle first meets Derek in the episode "The Play's the Thing," when he lands the role of Yankee Doodle in their school play, America the Beautiful.

Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen as Michelle Tanner

The actress has stayed busy in made-for-TV holiday movies, too, and serves as chief creative officer for the Great American Family network. In 2022, she received backlash on comments she made about the network's depiction of "traditional marriage," and responded by saying "it breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone." Since going back to work, her most memorable pop culture moments have been in the show Make It or Break It, her gig as a co-host on The View and her third-place finish on Dancing with the Stars. And she made Full House fans the happiest in 2016 when she, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber rebooted their series with the Netflix show Fuller House, following their characters into adulthood (and featuring cameos from most of the OGs). Rose Harbenberger (portrayed by Mckenna Grace) is C.J.'s daughter, and Max's love interest. C.J. Harbenberger (portrayed by Virginia Williams) is Steve's fiancée and mother to Max's friend, Rose.

Comet (portrayed by Buddy) is a golden retriever who is a pet of the Tanner family. He first appeared in "And They Call it Puppy Love" where his mother Minnie got into the Tanner family's backyard where she had her puppies. Out of the puppies, Comet was the one that the Tanner family kept.

D.J. Tanner

In 2018, he married longtime love Caitlin McHugh; together, they have one son named Billy. Just one year after Full House ended, Cameron became Cameron Bure when she married hockey pro Vareli Bure. She appeared in a few TV movies as well as an episode of Boy Meets World, and then took a few years off from acting to focus on her family (she has three grown children). Tanner-Fuller gets help from her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy when the women move in with their families to help D.J.

Jodie Sweetin as Stephanie Tanner

They eventually become a couple but at prom when his friends ask why he's with her, he pretends to say bad things about her to impress them but she overhears him in the photobooth and walks off. She breaks up with him but they eventually get back together. In the series finale, he tells her that he loves her. Jackson discovers he is good at kicking the football and becomes the star kicker on the football team.

Vicky makes a brief appearance in the season three finale of Fuller House. And Stephanie apparently tracked her down to cheer up Danny. He invites her to the 30th "Dadiversary" party the girls threw for Danny, Joey, and Jesse. She later makes another appearance in the series finale where she attends the triple wedding and both she and Danny agree that they are glad to have stayed friends after all these years.

She is often known to be a poor student in school, and had copied D.J.'s homework during most of the early seasons. (who had fallen asleep on her boyfriend Steve's couch while watching a movie in his apartment). Michelle Elizabeth Tanner (portrayed by twins Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen), is Danny and Pam's youngest daughter.

Daniel Ernest "Danny" Tanner (portrayed by Bob Saget, John Posey in the unaired pilot) is left with three young daughters to raise after his wife, Pam, dies in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. At the beginning of the series, he works as a sportscaster for Channel 8 News. In the season two episode "Tanner vs. Gibbler", he is chosen by his station's general manager Mr. Strowbridge to be the co-host for the station's new morning talk show, Wake Up, San Francisco, alongside Rebecca Donaldson.

For these two, Full House was just the beginning. The twin sisters went on to release a number of successful straight-to-video movies (Passport to Paris, anyone?), star in two more TV shows and launch their own company, Dualstar, which they took over as joint CEOs in 2004. Gradually, they both exited the acting world — Ashley hasn't had a real role in more than a decade, while Mary-Kate held on a little longer with stints in shows like Weeds. Now, they head up two fashion brands, The Row, a couture line, and the ready-to-wear label Elizabeth and James.

She also serves as a mother figure to the girls at times; most prominently giving advice to D.J. Becky gives birth to twin boys Nicholas and Alexander on Michelle's fifth birthday in part two of the season five episode "Happy Birthday, Babies". She and Jesse name Alexander after a teacher who inspired her to become a journalist and Nicholas after Jesse's father. Becky is offered a producer role on Wake Up, San Francisco in the season eight episode "The Producer", which results in Danny briefly quitting the show due to him being passed over for such a promotion.

He originally intended to fill in for his dad while he was away on a trip to India but decides to stay in San Francisco. While in Japan for Steve and C.J's wedding, Matt proposed to D.J. The next day at the wedding Steve calls off his wedding, and D.J. Becky helps to transform Jesse, although she still teases him about his obsession with his hair and love of Elvis. Joey has moved to Las Vegas in Fuller House and is now married with four kids that he refers to as the Gladstone Four.

Candace Cameron Bure as D.J. Tanner

They want her to host an all-women's talk show called The Gab. She, Jesse and Pamela move back to San Francisco. The Gab is a hit but turns back into Wake Up San Francisco. When the show starts back up Danny refuses to audition to be her co-host, which results in her being stuck with a Neanderthal co-host, but not long after he is able to get his old job back. Their relationship lasts until they break up in the season seven episode "Love on the Rocks," when they realize that the passion in their relationship is gone, but they agree to remain friends.

Later in season five's "Play It Again, Jesse," Danny insists that she take a news anchor job in Chicago that she was offered once Becky returns, and that starts a long-distance relationship (that goes from mid-season five to mid-season seven). Danny eventually proposes to her when she comes along on the family's vacation to Walt Disney World in "The House Meets the Mouse". Therefore, to the dismay of themselves and Danny's family, they have a mutual breakup. With her relationship with Steve, and helping Danny to deal with it, and serves as a motherly figure to D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle.

Nicky and Alex Katsopolis

His quirkiness and generally "unhip dad" personality are also targets for humor. He is a skilled pool, dart player and guitarist (revealed respectively in season four's, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," and season eight's, "To Joey, with Love"). In Fuller House, Jesse, Becky, and Danny all move to Los Angeles. Jesse becomes the music composer for General Hospital while Becky and Danny start a new nationally syndicated talk show called, Wake Up USA.

On TV season pages

Her best friends, Teddy and Denise, appear frequently in later seasons. Her best friends in school are Gia Mahan and Mickey, whom she meets in season seven (the former is the only one who appears through to season eight). In her early years, she is very sentimental about Mr. Bear, a stuffed animal that her mother gave to her after Michelle was born (this was the focal point of the season two episode "Goodbye Mr. Bear"). She and Jesse are the most abrasive when it comes to how they feel about Kimmy Gibbler. Jesse moves into the house with virtually no experience in taking care of young children or babies, but learns the ropes along the way.

Rebecca Donaldson Katsopolis

Derek is very educated and well-spoken for a boy of his age, though also a bit on the wimpy side. He also shows signs of being a bit obsessive-compulsive. As shown in several episodes (including in his first appearance), he is also shown to be a very talented singer. In the scene in which he is first introduced, Derek says he blends in with his surroundings. Derek reappears in the series finale of Fuller House when Danny and Joey try to find someone to officiate the triple wedding. Since she hasn't been dating Jimmy for that long, she doesn't want to put pressure on him for being the father, and throwing him into a lifelong commitment so soon in their relationship.

Gia reappears in season two of Fuller House when Kimmy gets the idea of getting their band "Girl Talk" back together. In season three, it was revealed that Gia has a daughter named Roxanne "Rocki" who is in summer school with Jackson. In season four she starts dating Matt much to DJ's annoyance.

Cast and characters

He and Michelle even consider trying to be boyfriend and girlfriend in third grade in the season eight episode "Dateless in San Francisco", but find that it is no fun for children their age. Sometime after high school Kimmy married a race car driver named Fernando, and had a daughter named Ramona. In the Fuller House sequel series, she gets separated from Fernando, then she and Ramona move into the Tanner family home after D.J's husband died. Kimmy starts a party planning business called Gibbler Style.

Vicky Larson (portrayed by Gail Edwards) is Danny's girlfriend during seasons five and six and was briefly his fiancée from the season six episode "The House Meets the Mouse" until halfway through season seven. Vicky is very focused on her career, which proves to be the undoing in her long-distance relationship with Danny. They meet in season five's "Nicky and/or Alexander," when Vicky fills in for Becky (who is on maternity leave) on Wake Up, San Francisco, and start dating two episodes later in "Easy Rider".

Teddy (portrayed by Tahj Mowry) is Michelle's best friend. He first appeared in the season five premiere "Double Trouble," when Michelle meets him on their first day of kindergarten following the advice that Joey told Michelle that the best way to make new friends was by being funny, and does a Bullwinkle impression. He accompanies her when she needs a "date" to sneak out and join Danny on a date with Vicky in the season five episode "Bachelor of the Month". He is also the one whose house Michelle runs away to in "The Devil Made Me Do It" later that season (Tahj Mowry's real-life sisters Tia and Tamera Mowry appear in that episode in a dual role as Teddy's older sister). He moves to Amarillo, Texas in the season six episode "The Long Goodbye". Teddy returns in the season seven episode "Be Your Own Best Friend", when his father's job moves him back to San Francisco.

Matt eventually starts dating Gia much to DJ's annoyance.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas

outdoor landscape design

Note that your backyard landscaping ideas should evolve as your needs change. There are many reasons to get an aesthetically pleasing fence, and it’s not just to keep urban critters out of your yard. Depending on your backyard landscaping ideas, a fence creates a neutral backdrop that you can use to design your perfect backyard space.

POOLS

There will also be a significant cost in the hard landscaping materials you choose (expect to spend most on boundaries, paving, patios and garden structures). In garden design, proportion refers to the size relationship of the different parts within a landscape plan. It’s important to consider how the plantings (also called softscape), hardscaping (such as pavers and walkways), buildings, and other elements (like water features) work together as a whole. Gerstle says that when planning an outdoor space, you can often scale up in size.

Create Privacy With Grasses

Whatever you need to fuel your spirit—from art, to aromatic flowers, to the perfect outdoor chair— that’s your oasis. When it comes to fencing, all-around fences may feel a bit like you’re boxed into your own backyard. If there’s a side of the house that offers beautiful views, partial privacy opens up your yard and gives you access to the visual wonders of your neighborhood. Partial privacy can be achieved with minimal fencing, a trellis or pergola, a living fence of cedars or other greenery, outdoor curtains, and many other options, too.

Create a 360-Degree View

Updating your home’s landscaping is a great way to increase the value of your property and create outdoor spaces for relaxing and entertaining. Use the information below to start determining what you want in your new landscape. For a minimalist feel that doesn’t make your concrete patio look too sparse or cold, add varying textures and colors to make the space appear inviting.

Give It a Garden Theme

A backyard pond is a terrific addition to a large backyard and gives you a noteworthy feature for your home. Backyard landscaping ideas have to suit the needs and desires of your entire household. Before deciding on a drastic change that limits the use of your backyard, consider everything you want to use it for, and make sure that your landscaping ideas work in harmony with your lifestyle. Designing a small patio often means you’ll need fewer materials, so you might be able to splurge on pricier pavers, outdoor floor tiles, or unusual plants. An inviting alfresco living space can add major appeal to your home, especially if you tap into backyard patio ideas to truly transform your outdoor mojo.

Ensuring your project is Designed Right, Built Right, On-time, and On Budget Guaranteed. First narrow down your options by thinking about the look you want to achieve. There is a huge choice of materials available, but one of the most important decisions to factor in is the sustainability of your desired materials and if they’re long lasting. There are always cheaper options available but they might not necessarily be the best so be realistic about what you can achieve within your budget.

Gardening Essentials

Rather than drag the same patio chair around the yard to enjoy or avoid the sun, having strategically placed patio furniture ensures you and your guests always have a comfortable place to relax. Gone are the days of a boring concrete slab that turns blindingly bright when the sun hits it midday. Today, the popular building material comes in a variety of textures, colors, and patterns that cater to your style and needs.

Well-Placed Retaining Wall

From the artistry of outdoor and landscape lighting design to the seamless installation of fixtures, we’re here to transform your outdoor space into a nighttime masterpiece. Our expert team combines aesthetics with functionality, creating a captivating atmosphere that enhances safety and ambiance.

Using a tool like the color wheel can help to narrow down options. “You might go cool, like purples and blues, or warm, like pinks and reds,” Monji adds. An English garden tends to have a more formal vibe, with sharply defined hedges, water features, walkways, and structures like pergolas and trellises covered with climbing vines. “You see a lot more plant material, such as perennials, and it’s going to feel a bit fussier,” says Gerstle.

“There’s just an overall good feeling about eating food you grew yourself,” says Gerstle. Monji and Gerstle shared their best strategies for how to approach the design process of a landscaping project. Tips on designing a contemporary landscape suited to an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. An artful design composition creates a beautiful orchestration of color and texture.

Transform your back or front yard with these residential landscaping ideas, tips, and projects. Even if your house started out with a good—or even great—lawn, you’ll need to reseed it every three to four years to keep it healthy. Luckily, it’s a fairly straightforward DIY-type task that doesn’t take too much time or effort, at least not if you have an average-size yard. Once a privacy fence is built, you can further dress it up to make it stand out from the rest in the neighborhood. Hanging baskets provides a spot to display cascading flowers or succulents, and a colorful mural can liven up an otherwise dull façade. Plantings at the base of the fence soften hard lines and add to your home’s curb appeal.

Even if you have a small yard or enough space for a gazebo or swimming pool, garden beds, low-maintenance hardscaping, privacy fencing, and a hammock perhaps can make this space dreamy. A beautiful space is wasted if you can’t enjoy it, which is where these covered backyard patio ideas come in handy. Adding an attractive cover to your backyard patio can be a smart investment to ensure you, your family, and your guests can enjoy the space year round, no matter what the elements have in store.

The separation can be solid or semi-open to allow light and glimpses into the adjacent space. Ornamental grasses are another popular option for those looking for an easy-to-care-for plant that offers a lot of visual interest. These alluring grasses can range from tiny tufts of grass to long reeds as tall as a person that billow in the wind. Perennial ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Muhlenbergia (a.k.a. pink muhly), and pampas grass need low maintenance and return year after year. To see how Laura Morton works as a transformational landscape designer—a “matchmaker” between nature’s power and the human yearning for order and beauty—explore her project galleries. There are definitely scenarios where terracing is more of a necessity than an aesthetic decision – say, if you're looking for sloped backyard ideas.

You might also have heard the term “xeriscape” used for these types of spaces. “Xeriscaping is a style of landscape where plants selected are drought tolerant, reducing or removing the need for irrigation,” says Bertalan. Retaining walls can also provide an idea area to feature cascading grasses, flowers, and greenery in your yard.

outdoor landscape design

Build a smaller yard with these simple features, incorporate them into your patio ideas or use them in a small section of a larger property, as Gil Schafer did in this pocket of his Hudson Valley home. While fences are a sure-fire way to keep things private, consider going lush with your greenery when choosing garden screening ideas to create a more natural-looking private divide. Candice Bertalan of Austin-based studio Tropic of Capricorn designed this pergola-shaded seating area surrounded by multiple plant varieties. In keeping with the above, Gerstle is seeing a movement away from verdant patches of grass. “I’m not declaring the end of lawns, but people are more open to eliminating them due to water concerns, and thinking about other ways to create open spaces for play,” she says.

The warm natural tones of wicker and wood can help soften a space, so they’re smart choices to consider when selecting outdoor furniture and outdoor dining pieces. Likewise, weatherproof rugs, throw pillows, and chic landscape design can all add dimension and visual breaks for the eye, which add to the overall experience. Covered patios afford homeowners the opportunity to play around with materials and textures. Bamboo structures give your space a tropical vibe, but if you add touches of black paint, then you’ve got a modern spin.

The family resided in the home for just two years, while May studied how the massive skylight and functional open plan worked out for his family, and for future residents of the home.

Two years later, with the help of a few close friends, Alan was able to build a new restaurant on the half acre of land for sale at the foot of the hill below the old Ranch House. The Ranch House began in one of the first homes in the Ojai Valley in 1875. Alan and Helen Hooker converted this into a boarding house in 1949 after relocating from Columbus, Ohio, where Alan had been managing a bakery.

We’re talking here about a deliberate new style of residential architecture—not the tract houses of a generation later. California architect Cliff May (1909–1989) is credited with the first modern Ranch, built in an Diego in 1932. Consciously interpreting the ranchos of the mid-19th century, May was one of many notable post-Arts and Crafts architects. A prolific designer and promoter, May sold the style that he himself called “the early California ranch house” throughout the West. He spoke not only about the architectural form, but also about the casual, family-oriented culture of the early (Mexican) Californians, whose gallant hospitality was legendary.

A 100-year-old vintage bench is the first item of furniture you see when you enter the house. “We joke that 10 people could sit down and take off their shoes at the same time. The piano is vintage with a custom bench cushion in Peter Dunham Fabric. Having a single-story ranch home may result in reduced outdoor space, as the construction requires more land.

Just as reluctant to serve wine, they started to allow customers to bring their own wine and charged a corkage fee of 25 cents per bottle. Customers would chill their wine in the small brook in the Ranch House garden. Photos are fairly scarce, but on-line listings show a living room anchored by a corner fireplace sporting a marble surround, along with a spacious dining room/workspace that sits adjacent to a kitchen outfitted with newer stainless appliances. A hallway leads to the bedrooms, which include a primary suite boasting a private balcony and spa-inspired bath. The Ranch House offers a prix fixe menu, with the option of a 3 or 5 course dining experience at two modest prices.

the ranch house

As of 1990, it was abandoned and in a state of disrepair, and covered in graffiti.[2] The site is currently owned by the city of Los Angeles. In early 2016, many of the ranch buildings were demolished, as they were deemed unsafe. A few buildings remain, including the power house, an all-concrete building that once contained the diesel generators.

The Ranch is intimate, yet immersive, and offers active programs with lasting results. Every movement is designed to improve physical performance, restore the mind, and promote longevity. Our luxury retreats in Malibu, CA and Hudson Valley, NY are ideal for solo, couple, or group experiences. A second look at history—and at these functional homes, now with mature landscape in established neighborhoods—is changing the way we see the American Ranch house.

He sold designs for about 18,000 ranch homes and over 1,000 custom residences. At the height of their ubiquitous construction in the 1950s and 1960s, May’s Los Angeles ranch houses were continually featured in magazines including House Beautiful, Sunset, and Architectural Digest. By integrating interior components such as skylights and translucent interior walls to harmonize with the natural landscape, he was essentially practicing environmental design before it was a recognized discipline.

Cliff May, the father of the California Ranch House

the ranch house

Old barns and workshops were repurposed into an art studio and a guest house. Alan cooked strictly vegetarian meals while Helen was in charge of housekeeping and serviced the large table where everyone shared meals. As guest lists grew, Alan procured a restaurant license in February of 1950, and so the couple christened their vegetarian guest house The Ranch House Restaurant.

Stop Searching for the Ultimate California Ranch House… Because We Found It for You

Built in West Los Angeles toward the end of the 1950s, the home has been photographed by Julius Schuman and appeared in multiple publications like the Los Angeles Times and Architectural Digest over the years. Unfortunately, the home was demolished in 1994 and an affordable housing development complex was built in its place. I can’t help but think May might be okay with that, utilitarian that he was. Windows looking out onto the vineyard steal the show in the guest room. “Another favorite piece is the vintage chest of drawers in the art studio that we salvaged from the original owner’s workshop.

SANTA FE BBQ BAR & GRILL

Now the mother of three calls Santa Barbara home and has shifted her focus to sustainable design. Until this point, the Ranch House was attempting to operate as strictly vegetarian, however this was strongly contributing to their financial troubles. Although longtime vegetarians, Alan and Helen began to serve meat alongside their fresh breads, desserts, and vegetables.

Ranch Lifestyle

Working in tandem with landscape architects, May designed low houses that followed the contours of the land, enclosing a courtyard or patio with carefully planned views of nature. By the mid-‘30s, his ranch houses had been published by Sunset magazine and nationally. As an untrained architect, May was said to have a “distaste” for “legitimate architecture,” as noted by architectural historian Barbara Allen. These homes, May argued, were unsustainable because they ignored California history and its natural climate and terrain.

the ranch house

Like May’s family homes where he grew up, The O’Leary House is a U-shaped residence that rambles around a large, walled courtyard, which is intended combine with the indoor living room to create one larrge indoor/outdoor living room. As with all the best May designs, glass sliders open to the courtyard and patios in keeping with May’s intention of integrating the interiors with the exteriors. Passage into the house is from a veranda with several pairs of French doors. The low-slung roof provides protection from the sun and rain, while the furnished veranda serves as transitional living space between indoors and out. The single-story house is built at ground level, making it seem like an old adobe rising out of the earth. A sixth generation Californian, and a descendant of the Estudillo and de Pedrorena families of San Diego, Cliff May grew up amid the intricate and Spanish-influenced architecture of Old Town San Diego, where the city’s original Mexican residents settled in the 1800s.

Features

This could pose a challenge if you need to accommodate your ranch-style residence on a smaller plot. Over the years, newspapers and magazines such as the Los Angeles Times, Gourmet California, and Travel & Leisure have praised the Ranch House’s homemade breads and desserts, fresh vegetables, delicious entrees, as well as the wine list. This dazzling array features over 600 domestic and imported wines, and remained 13 times winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Grand Award. The Ranch House is named one of the 100 most romantic restaurants in the USA by Conde Naste and Open Table in 2014.

Iconic LA: How Cliff May Invented Southern California Living

As with all of Cliff May’s prefab homes, the constant connection with the outdoors gives residents of the L-shaped house the unique perspective that there is only a thin line between the inside and outside. Plus, he was doing open plan layouts for guests to meander and mingle long before the no wall movement began in the early 2000s. “Initially, the clients gravitated toward more modern and a little bit mid-century style, but we wanted to be sure to honor the vibe of the area and take our cues from natural elements and the lifestyle they envisioned for their vacation time at the ranch,” she says. Constructing a one-story ranch-style house requires a larger space and significant formwork, including foundation, roofing, windows, and various materials. In contrast, a two-story ranch home will involve reduced ductwork, plumbing, and HVAC piping. The Ranch House began at the turn of the 20th century when one of the first homes was built in the Ojai Valley.

THE MODERN RANCH was the result of a conscious attempt by architects in the Southwest to crate a contemporary family house based on early regional forms, which were essentially Spanish. I don’t know what I was doing at 23 but it wasn’t designing and building houses. How it happened was May’s future father-law-law Roy C. Lichty generously gifted May a small but sizable lot in a new subdivision. Lichty, who was the general manager of the subdivision, saw May’s talent and genuine interest and unique perspective in architecture and also agreed to finance this first speculative house. Once completed, the house sold to Colonel Arthur O’Leary, who also purchased the Mission-style furniture that May had built and placed in the house to help sell it. May often included custom-built and one-of-a-kind furniture in his homes to help spur sales during the Great Depression.

His family homes Casa de Pedrorena and Casa de Estudillo, as well as his aunt’s lima bean farm on Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores in Oceanside, strongly influenced May’s later designs. The sparse geometry of Casa De Pedrorena and Los Flores’ U-shaped adobes, and the Monterey style and form of Rancho Santa Margarita, seemed to May to represent the quintessential indoor/outdoor Southern California experience. May merged these influences into his original ranch house designs of the 1930s, which, postwar, were known as “dream houses” and resulted in the creation of the style known today as the California Ranch. The 20th-century ranch house style has its roots in North American Spanish colonial architecture of the 17th to 19th century. These buildings used single-story floor plans and native materials in a simple style to meet the needs of their inhabitants. Walls were often built of adobe brick and covered with plaster, or more simply used board and batten wood siding.

But, May did not make use of partitions as he had previously in the Experimental House. Instead, he built interior walls and doors to provide privacy for the bedrooms, bathrooms, and dressing rooms. The courtyards were located on both sides of the house rather than having the main courtyard in the center. Also unlike his previous designs, he added Spanish, Mexican, and French architectural crafts and decorative elements such as a sixteenth-century Gothic grille, historic doors, lighting fixtures, and wrought-iron door handles, and antiquated books. May received his first commission from Dr. John Beardsley, for whom May produced another hacienda in 1933 with thick walls, a red-tiled roof, and heavy wood doors and window grilles in Loma Portal. Businessman and developer George Marston offered May a lot to build his home in Presidio Hills, where the young man constructed another rambling hacienda (the Alex Highland House, 1934).

The film company behind the biopic has restored signature features from when Jackson owned the 2,700-acre ranch near Santa Barbara -- the Ferris wheel, merry-go-round and circus tent all got colorful makeovers. The One Key Chicago Athletic Association has had an illustrious and sometimes sordid history that dates back to 1893, when it wasn’t quite a hotel. A lot has changed since then, but the ghosts of the past are never far away.

This rare and wonderful mid-century modern ranch home was designed and built by May in 1952 in Studio City’s exclusive and verdant Fryman Canyon neighborhood. Fryman Canyon offers several great hiking trails and stunning views of both Studio City and Downtown Los Angeles. The single-story ranch home, pool, and the lush and expansive .81 acres it’s perched upon incredibly captures the essence of the romantic Southern California indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The Fryman Canyon Ranch, which is what I’ve taken to calling it, has an abundance of windows and sliding glass doors that allow natural daylight in nearly every corner of the home.

The renovation work was complicated by the fact that Marriott had sold approximately 100 units in the hotel as condominiums. Their owners had to be paid to leave during renovations and the new guest rooms had to be constructed around the residential units, which were located randomly throughout the building.

A studio apartment is currently $2,199, and we use a budgeting rule that says rent should not be more than 30% of your total income. So $70,000 would not be enough to live in LA at the average rate; you would want to earn closer to $90,000 a year. How can I find a pet-friendly apartment in Los Angeles?

Renting an apartment in LA is actually easier and less expensive than in cities of comparable size like San Francisco and New York. Legions of dreamers, wanderers, pioneers, artists and those in search for a better life have picked up and moved to the belly of the beast, and so can you. A Mexico-based investor has purchased a 23-story apartment building in central Dallas. It’s tough to predict what Amli Design District might sell for, as few apartment buildings in DFW have traded in recent months. If you don’t already have opportunities lined up in a particular area of Los Angeles, then your options are pretty open.

Rent prices listed are averages and may not reflect the cost of specific units. Rental prices can vary depending on factors like size, location, amenities, and availability. A California-based investment fund has purchased a 270-unit apartment community in McKinney. CONAM Multifamily Partners Fund III, a unit of CONAM Group, bought Arise Craig Ranch from Davis Development.

Amli Design District contains 314 luxury units, with floor plans ranging from studios to two-bedrooms. Average rent is $2,400 a month, and it’s currently 90 percent leased. The average apartment occupancy in Dallas-Fort Worth is 91.6 percent.

A 3-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles will cost, on average, $4,581 per month. The average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles is approximately $2,848 per month. Amli Residential, led by CEO Gregory Mutz, bought the high-rise in 2016, roughly three years after it was built. JLL is marketing the property as a value-add opportunity “at a significant discount to replacement cost,” the outlet reported. Now that you’ve been outfitted with the proper tools, tip, and tricks, we’re confident that finding the LA apartment of your dreams is definitely within reach.

AMLI Design District (formerly 1400 Hi Line) is the first residential high-rise to go up in Dallas's popular design district. For instance, there is an infinity-edge saltwater pool, a Skyline resident lounge and a nearly 1 acre elevated private park with great views of downtown.

Central Park Hotel

jw marriott essex house

The iconic, 528-room JW Marriott Essex House New York is a luxury hotel located right across the street from the southern edge of Central Park. Art Deco-style rooms and suites are elegant and comfortable, with great beds, large flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Many have wonderful park views, but some are showing wear despite the extensive 2017 renovations (and high price tag) and overlook a wall.

But if you go on a weekend, it’s best to reserve a time ahead on the museum’s website or go when the doors first open. Shooting up into the sky like an angular white cheese grater, The Broad’s exterior is as arresting as its interior, which houses more than 2,000 modern art pieces. These locations are organized in order, based on proximity to each other, and end at the Hollywood Bowl. If you time it just right, you can take in a show at the Bowl to truly appreciate its acoustic ingenuity.

JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa

The spa is excellent, and the on-site Southgate Bar & Restaurant is popular among visitors and locals alike. While the Essex House is among the most expensive hotels in Manhattan, pesky fees abound, including a daily resort fee that doesn’t cover in-room Wi-Fi or valet parking. Travelers looking for a truly standout property should consider the Mandarin Oriental, New York, which is nearby and has well-sized rooms with impressive bathrooms. Primp is the hotel’s full-service spa, which offers body treatments such as wraps, massages, and scrubs plus a variety of salon services in an elegant space on the third floor. Adjacent is the 24-hour fitness center that, although it is rather compact, offers a good array of cardio and strength-training machines. Southgate Bar & Restaurant has direct street access and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park, which make it popular not only among guests but among visitors and locals alike.

Explore the Central Park Suite Collection

I’d note that this property is a bit older in design and furnishings, and its Executive Lounge more basic, compared to more modern JW Marriott properties around the world that I’ve stayed at. I largely enjoyed my stay here, in large part due to the amazing Manhattan Suite upgrade that I wasn’t expecting. Like most New York properties, this one is fairly expensive, though can be worth it on Bonvoy points or using a Free Night Award.

Experience New York City

The bedroom was fitted with a comfortable king-sized bed with plush bedding, plus two side tables, an ottoman at the foot of the bed, and a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall opposite. A separate hallway leads from the living room to the bedroom, with the bathroom in the middle to the left. The hotel is in a prime location in Midtown at the southern edge of Central Park. As a Marriott Bonvoy property, the JW Marriott Essex House falls under Category 7, so free nights can be booked for 50,000–70,000 Bonvoy points per night, depending on whether it’s a off-peak, standard, or peak date. Essex House was originally constructed in the 1930s, beginning construction just after Black Tuesday, the day Wall Street crashed, in 1929. The hotel finally opened late in 1931 after many delays due to the financial crash, and its iconic neon sign was hoisted to the top a year after.

The living area of the suite is separated from the bedroom, and features a velvet dark blue sectional and two wing chairs with leather accents, centred around a flat-screen TV. The foyer is inlaid with marble floors and brass elevator doors, with a large glass chandelier hanging from the ceiling and wide halls, creating a grand entrance. New York’s subway is known to be more convenient for travelling than by cab, bus, or car, with 27 different lines and 472 stations within the city. The nearest station from the hotel can be found at the Columbus Circle, only a five-minute walk away. In 2012, the Essex House became the JW Marriott Essex House New York, linking up with one of Marriott’s luxury hotel brands. I stayed at the JW Marriott Essex House New York for one night during a trip to New York in September 2021.

Oyster Hotel Review

Our recently reimagined hotel rooms and family suites boast Art Deco designs, smart technology, connecting rooms and luxury amenities such as plush bedding, marble bathrooms and views of NYC. Southgate is located in the hotel and is a casual-upscale bar, restaurant, and lounge. The space has high ceilings, modern decor, and an excellent ambiance for evening cocktails. The entrance is located directly on W 59th Street under a timeless gold marquee, emphasizing the hotel’s historical past. A total of 44 stories of the building tower over the city, with sweeping Central Park views from north-facing rooms.

No doubt, the outdoor terrace was the highlight of the suite. It was incredible to be high-up above the city in the middle of the action facing Billionaires’ Row, and I loved spending a few moments out here during the daytime and nighttime. The Manhattan Suite designation covers many different types of suites at the hotel, given the unique building that it’s housed in. Learn about the history, culture and architecture of Central Park as the guides from City Running Tours lead Essex House guests and residents through an invigorating run.

However, taking a moment to stop in and revel in the light-drenched minimalistic interior is breathtaking. A beautiful, somewhat secret public park is located on the rooftop. Philharmonic concert (although the Gehry-designed pipe organ is worth it!), you can take a look around inside the foyer and explore the hidden nooks on the outside. Designed by New York–based firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, The Broad is free to visit.

Our Artisans Terrace Suite features a wraparound terrace with views of the Manhattan skyline. The original Natural History Museum building, better known as the 1913 Building, was designed by William A.D. Munsell and Frank Hudson and is a classic example of Beaux Arts architecture. Treat yourself to SOUTHGATE Bar and Restaurant for on-site dining and mouthwatering American cuisine.

Mindfulness and reflection are encouraged with hidden seating and peaceful walking paths. Strolling through the olive grove is a lovely way to connect with nature. Prince of Travel is Canada’s leading resource for using frequent flyer miles, credit card points, and loyalty programs to travel the world at a fraction of the price. Additionally, the hotel has a small fitness centre located on the third floor, with all-new modern treadmills, ellipticals, weight machines, and free weights.

One of the city's architectural treasures dazzles this stretch of 59th Street. The timeless Art Deco entrance flashes back to 1930s New York. A sophisticated lobby space feels almost palatial, with tray ceilings trimmed in gold, checkerboard stone floors, mammoth black-marble columns and a wide central hall that leads to the elevators and executive lounge. The neutral scheme of black, white, mahogany brown and creamy beige continues from the lobby and reception area through to the guestrooms.
